Beatbox tutorial – Equipment guide

www.fattonybbx.com A short equipment guide. Unscripted this time, and it shows. Not too happy with this vid to be honest, was a spur of the moment thing and it reflects in how badly planned it was. There’s still some good info here though, especially if you are just starting. All explained in simple terms too, although I will be doing a more advanced vid later. The stuff I mention… Behringer XM8500 – £20, check eBay for cheap deals Roland Street Cube – £180, a little pricy but I love it. XLR-XLR cable – £5 XLR-Jack cable – £5 Especially if you’re just starting out you’re probably best off with a little guitar amp. Ask in your local music store for something that’d be suitable – like I say, more often than not they’ll let you plug in and try it before you commit to buying. Unless they’re douchebags, in which case you shouldn’t be giving them your money anyway. The Shure SM58 I mention is used worldwide for performances and is by far the most popular microphone for singers and the like, and can be picked up for around £80. The XM8500 is practically identical. Mine looks a little scuffed… it has, after all, been to various parts of the world with me. They are very durable. The Roland Street Cube is just beautiful. It’s a very sexy amp with a nice design, and the bright firetruck red amp is very eyecatching. There are a bunch of effects for the instrumental input, and the mic input has the usual delay and reverb effects. You can set the EQ too, which is fun. 6 AA

@aussie4lifeful A cheap amp? If you aren’t too bothered about the sound quality you can probably get one for less than $20. Your best bet is to go to a music store and ask if you can plug your mic in to test ‘em if you’re going that route, however.

@BiggiebBeatbox To connect to your laptop you’d either need an XLR-1/8 inch jack (or XLR – 1/4 inch jack, then an adapter) or you can use a USB soundcard. If this sounds in any way confusing then go to a dedicated music or electronics store with the mic and laptop and ask them to take you through it. I’m sure they’ll be happy to help out, and it’s far easier to have somebody physically show you :)

    You look like Russel Brand.

  16. FatTonyBBX says:

@edwardgerrard You can, but I haven’t tried, what with having about as much interest in kp3s as I have in the mating rituals of the common centipede.

  17. FatTonyBBX says:

@BluesMaddy The XLR port on the mic is female so the male end goes into that slot (ooh err). If you’re then plugging it into the XLR port on an amp then it’s female into the male, ie. an XLR-XLR cable should be male-female and an XLR to 1/4 inch jack should be male-jack

  18. BluesMaddy says:

Is the XM8500′s XLR jack male or female? I’m waiting to for the mic itself to arrive, but I need to know what cable to get along with it.

  20. FatTonyBBX says:

@AlexandarProdaction That’s essentially true, but it’s important to practice with equipment before getting up on stage.
